It’s time to think about giving a little something back to your colleagues and to the industry by becoming a volunteer. This is why NPPA is casting a wide net this year for candidates for NPPA Region 2 Director and Associate Director. Our new nominations chairperson, Debbie Egan-Chin, will accept all nominations for office – complete with a photo and a few paragraphs explaining why you are a good candidate and what new dimensions you would bring to the board. Currently, Region 2 Director Todd Maisel and AD Mark Dye intend to run again for office. We invite all those who want to run for office to contact ASAP at debbieeganchin@mindspring.com. It is an opportunity to get involved in the work of this great organization and to become a leader in your field. Let us know.
Photographers must wear safety vests on roadways under New Federal Law
A new law goes into effect on November 24, 2008, which will require all workers on federal highways to wear high visibility safety apparel, which apparently also includes photojournalists who are there to cover news. While the law does not specifically list members of the media, it includes “people on foot whose duties place them within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway, such as ... responders to incidents within the highway right-of-way.”
The U.S. Department of Transportation has repeatedly stated that it considers the media to be included under this law. During the legislative comment period the DOT received requests to expand the definition to include media workers. The Federal Highway Administration responded that the term ``responders to incidents'' includes media representatives. Transportation officials say photographers without vests, while not facing fines at this point, might be ejected from scenes of news stories and would also face more personal liability in the event of an accident. The National Newspaper Association is selling a vest for $15 that meets the requirements with the word "PRESS" printed on the back in large letters.

NPPA table at PhotoPlus makes new connections
This year’s PhotoPlus at the Javits Center this past Oct. 23-25 featured a booth from NPPA, manned by Executive Director Jim Straight, President Bob Carey and assisted by R2 Director Todd Maisel and his AD Mark Dye, R1 Director Tom Costello, NSC Chair Michelle McLoughlin and Bill Auth. Important new contacts were made and we believe new sponsors will step up to sup-port professional photographers throughout the country. Many new members signed up. This year, the association is offering liability insurance that many of our members need because of indemnity contracts being dispersed by many publications.

Buy-out parties
A party was held at Legends in Manhattan for Linda Cataffo and Mike Appleton of the NY Daily News, who took buy-outs this past month. We wish them well. Also celebrating was NY Daily News Photo Director Michael Lipack and his right hand editor Jo Barefoot, who passed the 20 year mark in their professional work at the News.
Thanks to NYPD
From all our reports, the NYPD was very cooperative during all our shoots during the election evening. Times Square was very crowded and police were very patient with all shooters that night.
